UT Austin National Real Estate Challenge
Columbia Business School Earns First Place at the 2017 UT Austin National Real Estate Challenge  

Columbia Business School’s case competition team topped nineteen other business schools to finish first at the 2017 National Real Estate Challenge hosted by UT Austin in November. The team, Le Tigre Group, consisting of Patricia Craig ’19, Kerry Kartsonis ’19, Patrick Keppenne ’18, Stephan Sakhai ’18, Jay Stewart ’19, and Jose Torres ’18 impressed the judges by negotiating a mezzanine loan modification on a suburban power center. Lessons to Share: Real Estate Students "Trek" to San Francisco
Real Estate Students Travel to San Francisco  

In early November, a group of nineteen first and second year real estate students travelled to the Bay Area to meet with local professionals focused on real estate development, investment, advisory services and technology. Over the two-day trek, the group visited nine companies including Hines, Boston Properties, CBRE, Airbnb, CIM Group, Trulia, Bentall Kennedy, Spear Street Capital, and Carlyle Group. Read more.

Columbia Business School Hosts 6th Annual "Coming to Terms: Negotiating Real Estate Joint Ventures" Workshop

In November, 80 students from eight different graduate degree programs within Columbia, MIT, NYU, and Harvard gathered in Uris Hall for the 6th annual Coming to Terms: Negotiating Real Estate Joint Ventures event. The full-day workshop offered participants the unique opportunity to engage with and learn from experienced professionals from both the legal and business sides of the real estate industry. Beverly Hills Retail Proposal Leads the 2017 Alexander Bodini Foundation Prize Real Estate Project Class Competition
2017 Project Class Competition  

Students in the Real Estate Project class, led by Adjunct Professor Andrew C. Jacobs ’96 presented their final business plan presentations, and in early December, competed for four prizes thanks to the generosity of the Alexander Bodini Foundation. The winning team, Sam Fenwick ’18, Alex Grant ’18, and Emily Steinberg ’18 presented on behalf of the Sterling Organization. Read more.

Ideas at Work: Professor Christopher Mayer on Homeownership and the American Dream

In a recently published paper in the Journal of Economic Perspectives, Professor Mayer and Laurie S. Goodman of the Urban Institute provide a detailed look at US homeownership. They show that the pendulum may have swung too far against homeownership, a valuable institution that has allowed families to build wealth and create financial security. Read the article.
