The 10th Annual Real Estate Symposium took place on December 4, 2017 at the Princeton Club of New York. Hosted by the Paul Milstein Center for Real Estate and the Real Estate Circle of Columbia Business School, the educational forum offered wide-ranging discussions on topics of importance, such as market trends, hospitality, global real estate, innovations in design and construction, and changes in the retail landscape, along with a celebratory networking reception in honor of the 10th anniversary. We were delighted to see over 230 alumni, spanning 58 graduation years—thank you to all who participated and attended! Jonathan Tisch, who was named "Hotelier of the World" by Hotels Magazine, was both candid and generous in his thoughts on the hotel business, the future of hospitality and the growth opportunities for Loews Hotels & Company. Tisch’s passion for best-in-class hospitality has empowered the growth of Loews into an empire of 24 hotels in the US and Canada, with a number of new hotels under development. Read the full report.

Short Take: Global Real Estate in Europe, London: Lance West of Centerbridge Partners |
In an all-new "short take" feature presentation, Lance West, Senior Managing Director, Chairman and Management Committee Member at Centerbridge Partners, shared the winners and losers in the current European real estate market. Given the tall task of summarizing the European markets in twenty minutes, West provided analyses on the business drivers across the continent and the recovery post-financial crisis, zeroing in on three key countries: the UK, Germany, and Spain. David Sherman ’82 of Metropolitan Real Estate and Co-Director of the Paul Milstein Center for Real Estate, moderated a discussion on trends in global real estate investing with four experts on global and domestic real estate investment. Panelists included Peter Ballon, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, Adam Gallistel ’04, GIC Real Estate, Susan Swanezy, Hodes Weill & Associates, and Kevin Faxon, J.P. Morgan Asset Management. Given the rapid growth of e-commerce and disruption from companies such as Amazon, an oversupply of retail in the United States, and the decline of brick and mortar sales from retail giants such as Macy’s and Sears, this panel, led by Gentry Hoit ’90 of GreenOak, and included Kathryn Bucklew, EDENS, Tim Stenta, GGP, and Scott Trafford, TH Real Estate, provided an interesting perspective into the challenges and changes facing the retail sector today.
