Columbia Business School Hosts 8th Annual Workshop on Negotiating Real Estate Joint Ventures |

Arranging capital is a fundamental element of real estate investment and development. The Coming to Terms Negotiating Real Estate Joint Ventures Event was hosted at Columbia Business School for the 8th time on Friday, November 22nd, 2019, where over 70 graduate students in business, real estate, law, engineering, and planning from Columbia, MIT, NYU, and Harvard gathered for a full day in Uris Hall to participate in discussing the key issues in a real estate joint-venture agreement. The event was co-sponsored by the Paul Milstein Center for Real Estate, the Grosvenor Group, the Columbia Graduate School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation, and the MIT Center for Real Estate and allowed students the unique opportunity to engage with and learn from experienced practitioners from both the legal, finance, and operational sides of the real estate industry. The Paul Milstein Center for Real Estate was pleased to have hosted a special Distinguished Speaker Lunch with Hugh R. Frater ’85, CEO of Fannie Mae on-campus this November. The lunch drew over 100 students and covered topics on PropTech in the residential mortgage underwriting business, affordability and the housing crisis, the evolving state of U.S. housing finance, future path of GSE's, as well as his experience from his time at Columbia Business School to Fannie Mae. The discussion was moderated by Brian Lancaster, Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Finance, Columbia Business School. A special thank you to Hugh for his time and for sharing his experience with the business school community.

Seeking to learn more about one of the United States’ most dynamic real estate markets, the Columbia Business School Real Estate Association (REA) traveled to Austin, Texas for its fall trek. Over the two days, 25 students met with seven businesses operating across the real estate value chain. During the meetings, the group learned how investing strategies are evolving to mitigate cycle risk and how technology is beginning to reshape the industry. Read more →
